Name - Erebos
Type - Protogenos (Primeval God)
Age - Virtually as old as the universe.
Gender - Male
Parents/Family - Parent: Chaos.
Siblings: Nyx (Night), Eros (Love), Gaia (the Earth), Tartarus(the Underworld)
Children: Aether (Light), Hemera (Day).
Powers - The usual godly powers: shape-changing, gift of tongues, telepathy, transportation to and from Olympus, etc. Erebos’ unique power is to control, to a certain extent, the darkness within the hearts and minds of others. He cannot force them, especially humans, to do evil deeds, nor can he control what deeds they do. It is their own choice, and it amuses him to see what they actually choose to do.
Another power that he has allows him to manipulate any dark patches, including shadows, and can literally become one with the darkness, making him impossible to see.
Weaknesses - He had a aversion to strong light, especially sunlight. Being the god of Darkness, light is his opposite and it can overpower him, when bright enough. There is a weapon of light, forged by his children, Aether and Hemera, that has the power to seriously harm, or even annihilate him. But this he had hidden away in Hades just in case any budding heroes get it into their heads to try to take him out.
Another weakness that he has consists of his friendliness to others, giving him few friends and allies. Erebos is not particularly a people person, often suspecting those who try to try to get close to him.
Physical Description - When walking upon the Earth, Erebos is inclined to be in the shape of a tall, thin, solemn man. He only wears black which is so dark that it appears to be like a black hole, sucking in light. This gives him a bright aura of light before the photons are absorbed by his clothes. His raven hair and eyes are the same, pitch black, hair usually cut almost down to his chin level. His skin is pale and his face is gaunt, with rather pronounced cheek bones, but not unpleasing to the eye.
In Hades and on Mount Olympus, Erebos wears long midnight robes with a billowing cloak, retaining the same face as he uses on Earth. His robes have little glimmers that reflect the patterns of the stars as they were a gift from his consort Nyx many years ago.
His true form he rarely reveals, even when in the presence of other Gods. He is humanoid shape of darkness, without hair, face or features, and his presence
Mental Description - Erebos is quite a solemn God, who rarely likes to interfere with the on goings at Olympus but finds playing with the minds of mortals an amusing way to pass the time. Another hobby of his is to taunt the souls in Hades, whether or not they are condemned to an eternity of suffering, and also to play with the lives of humans.
Being a little arrogant, Erebos is fond of using sarcasm in a cutting fashion. He also has a rather dry sense of humour, but rarely smiles. It seems that he tolerates the presence of others rather than welcoming it but rarely ever looses his cool, being a calmer sort of god.
On top of the above mentioned, Erebos his a paranoid streak. He fears conspiracy against him and can even suspect plots from the most unlikely corners.
History - Having been brought into being from a single parent, Chaos, Erebos was more of an elemental in the very beginning. However, soon he developed into humanoid personification, much like his siblings, Nyx and Eros did. This became his true form but harked back to before he became what was classed as a god.
He married his sister, Nyx, as gods had a tendency to do, and with her fathered two children (named above). However, after thousands of years of being used by his wife and chivvied around by his children, Erebos decided that he had had enough of married life, and escaped to the underworld for some peace and quiet. This left his wife to do whatever the hell she wanted without scolding him for doing something wrong.
It was around this time that humans began to flourish, after Prometheus gave them fire, and the influx of souls through Erebos’ realm of the underworld lessened. In some ways, it was something of a relief, getting Hades off his back every time a soul took the wrong turn from the river and ended up loosing his way. Sometimes, he even had to point out whose job it was to actually take care of the dead, and it wasn’t his.
It was these little quibbles, occurring more and more frequently all the time, the made Erebos return to the summit of Olympus.
Now watching live humans instead of dead ones, he discovered just how amusing it was to play with some of them. With just the right amount of nudging to the darkest parts of certain hearts, that a beautiful argument would break out over the most trivial of things. Over the years, Erebos has nudged the minds of many bloody-thirsty men to take up arms and go to war, despite coming into minor conflict with Ares down the millennia. Still, it was better than getting bored and returning to being bossed around by his wife.
Soon, his children became disenchanted with their father’s source of amusement, and between them, forged a weapon of light, powerful enough to potential annihilate Erebos if someone skilled enough used it against him.
Knowing of this threat presented by his children, Erebos bided his time until he had such opportunity to steal the weapon. Initially, he attempted to destroy it, but he found that it was beyond his power to do. Not wanting to take it to any other of the immortals, fearing that they might use it against him, Erebos took the weapon down to the underworld and stashed it deep in his domain, far from the prying eyes of his children and any others that sought his demise.
In more resent centuries, he has frequently descended from Olympus to walk amongst the humans, finding that his gift to turn them towards the dark is more effective at a closer range. Some of his most high profile experiments have been Emperor Nero, Vlad the Impaler, and Adolf Hitler. Of course, he hasn’t only allowed people to listen to the darkness in their hearts, he has also occasionally stopped the darkness from whispering to them, creating very good men, as well as evil. However, he found that if the world of humans became good, and everyone became nice and kind, all the interesting things about humans would disappear and there would go his entertainment with it.
Current Residence - Olympus and occasionally the area of Hades that is his namesake.
