((I'm not sure if I should put her under pre-existing characters or not oO.))
Name- Apate
Type- Personification
Age- Oh, hard to say this. She was born an era or so after the creation of world maybe? So that makes her pretty old though.
Gender- female
Parents/Family- like many of personifications, Abate is fatherless and her mother is Nix, personification of night. Her siblings are numerous, named Moros, Ker, Thanatos, Hypnos, the tribe of Oneiroi, Momos, Oizysand, the Hesperides, Moirai, Keres, Nemesis, Philotes, Geras, and Eris.
Powers- Her name means 'deception', thus she's master of deceiving people and playing with their minds. She is able to twist the truth into lie and lie into truth and can create a perfect illusion, enslaving her victims with guile. Creating false ‘worlds’ is her hobby and many of her ‘chosen ones’ eventually lose their mind, not seeing the difference between reality and lies anymore. But for creating those illusions she needs the truth, because without a tree she can’t convince someone that there’s standing a giant. She can also change her appearance, from which only two are original (more about this one in description). Yet changing appearance is more like mimicking than true shape shifting. Here comes the illusion part again; human/hero/god must really believe that he or she is seeing what Apate wants them to see. With humans this is pretty easy, harder is with heroes and even more with gods. If person knows the truth, Apate’s deception is revealed. Immortality is also her power but we could say it’s minor because she’s not the only one or one of the few immortal. When she wishes to have some peace, she becomes invisible to those she doesn’t want them to see her.
Weaknesses- Truth. She is completely powerless when someone overlooks her illusions. So we can presume that Serum of Truth is her poison. It can seriously injure her being when given only a few drops and even destroy her physical body in large amounts. Living for centuries with people also made her more human like, more compassionate and when playing tricks on others, more human side feels sorry for the victims. It angers her greatly since her primal nature is still dominant. Not to mention Sebastian, mortal who is always around her. He makes her weaker, less 'immortal like'.
Physical Description- ((Girl form refers to Angelo Bronzini's L'Allegoria dell' Amore e del tempo because I really like Apate's appearance there)) original form: her upper body is body of a little girl aged around twelve or thirteen. Face is light, with soft round cheeks and delicate porcelain skin. Her lips are small, slightly puckered in cute manner. One would expect her nose would be button like, but just contrary; it's quite long and straight, slightly pointed. Also eyes are complete opposite of her childlike face; they are small and cold, not hard to get lost in their deep blue colour. Shoulder length honey coloured hair is curly, making her face look even softer and more innocent and trustworthy. Overall she is a living image of porcelain dolls. Her true nature is revealed with her hands and lower part of body. Why her hands? Because they are not like hands of other human-like beings. They are shifted; her right hand is on the place of left and left on the place of right. She doesn’t even have legs; instead of them she has snake's body, which colour is match to colour of her hair.
Apate's other form is younger, more human like and despite true age, older. It appears to be a woman in her thirties or at least twenty-five years old. It's not much different from child like form. Here her face is still soft and round yet her chin is more pointed and lips are more inflated, hair is a bit longer with fewer curls and darker in colour. Since this is more human like form, her eyes are not cold anymore but warmer and brown. Two main differences are that her hands are on the right place and that she has normal legs.
Mental Description- Apate is very intelligent and wise although one would hardly believe that due to her childish nature but it takes a lot of thinking and strategy to deceive a large group of people. Not to mention imagination. She could tell you a completely unreal story in such manner that you would believe every word of it without hesitation, maybe even go searching for hidden treasure immediately. At the beginning of her life she spent a lot of time thinking what else she should do to those naive mortals, she studied their behaviour and weaknesses just for her own fun. It sounds cruel but she's not only a bad spirit. The living being she really cares about, are animals. She admires and respects their ability to intimidate, hide and deceive predators ... Oh yea, there is another living being she cares about too; Sebastian. She feels deep affection towards him, something similar to love but since she's a personification, her feelings are a bit different than those of humans. So, having two original physical forms also means having two different minds. One is that of a playful but intelligent child and the other is of mature woman, who still enjoys tricks and manipulation but with healthy boundaries.
Her hobbies are many. Sebastian is one of them though. Other than him are visiting theatres (she prefers comedy or at least black humour), playing different roles (Shakespeare is one of her favourite writers and although she doesn't really like Romeo and Juliet, she enjoys making fun of that tragedy), writing stories and painting. Painting is actually the best way to twist the truth, although not for a very long time. Her favourite painter is Salvador Dali.
Through centuries she had different interests and different tastes but one thing never quite reached her list of 'My favourites'; that's truth. She doesn't really hate it; she's more or less scared of it. It's her total opposite so that's no wonder. Strange thing is that sometimes she even likes it but... only if it's from Sebastian.
History- Once upon a time, after Nyx's many pregnancies, was born Apate was born, as one of the youngest of the children of night. Apate was a cunning child, mischievous and with extreme imagination. It didn't take her long to leave her mother's side and go between people, playing tricks on them. She spent a lot of her time with them and eventually she evolved a physical body, making herself visible to mortals, although they didn't like that so much. She never really knew why, because her games were pretty brilliant ... Ah well, everyone has a different taste for humour. Or just lack of it. Time went by quickly and soon one man, known as Prometheus, has done something very bad since Gods were very angry with him. Well, Apate didn't care about that much, didn't even see much importance in it but anyway. She got her first real job! She was so excited although being trapped in the jar with few other personifications was pretty annoying. Not to mention that Hope was ranting and ranting about being at the bottom and not being able to move. Eventually she was so annoyed that when someone opened the jar, she was one of the first outside. And she felt great! This time Gods actually gave her permission to play with people's minds as much as she wishes, and boy it was fun! Like if whole world was her playground. In that time she even made few friends: cunning warlords that knew how to deceive their enemy, false wizards, actors ... Children were amongst her best friends. Whose imagination is greater than child's? Not counting Apate herself. With help of the children her power grew even stronger, like if it was seed and imagination water. Some mortals were even worth of her respect. Oedipus for example was one of them. True, he was the reason why Sphinx, her good friend, committed a suicide but anyway, it's good to know someone who's almost as smart as you. There was also that guy, Odysseus. Boy was that guy smart. Apate really admired him after his role in Trojan War. Who knew that he would so eagerly accept those few advices from the 'voice' in his head? He even figured it out how to avoid deception of sirens! That's something too. And years passed again, Apate had a lot of work to do as new generations of humans came. She knew better not to mess with Gods. Although she knew that tricking them would be hilarious. Yet.... She was smart, remember? Freedom was much more tempting than eternity in Tartarus. Who knew what punishment would await her there? Too horrible to think about probably. Luckily she never got that bored to make something so stupid although eventually she became more and more bored. Everything seemed the same, all corrupted people were the same and without imagination. But this was not the only thing that bothered her. She spent too much time with mortals and part of her became more like them, with wider selection of feelings. It was quite annoying actually.
Observing the growth of human population and technology she realized that she would really like to live among humans, pretending that she's one of them. And so was born her new game. In her human form she walked among the mortals and tried to live like them. Because it was too hard for her to earn the money, she decided to take the easiest way. Gambling and beating proved to be the quickest ways. It didn't take her long to become wealthy. And after this success she faked her own death and left all the money to her 'cousin', who was no one else than Apate herself. Oh, it was so hilarious standing above her grave and crying. And nobody noticed that coffin was actually empty, well, not quite empty. She put plastic skeleton in it, just to make the situation funnier. After the second faked death and some more money she donated it to some theatre in Greek in which she also made an apartment out of attic. Not all by herself but with workers and such. She wasn't seen in the public so much anymore, at least not as young woman. This era she decided to be herself, her girl-snake self and mostly invisible. Also in this era she met Sebastian. He was still a child then, quite a wild one we could say, with amazing imagination which attracted Apate to him. At first she was invisible to him and to his friends but eventually, when his friends weren't around, she appeared in front of him in form of a little girl in summer dress. She enjoyed in his company, although sometimes he made her very angry because he wasn't so easy to trick as it seemed. It seemed that he was one of those smart men she respected so much. When he got older, she stopped with her visits with no real reason. Maybe because he started to be more aware of the real world. This step proved to be a mistake since Apate realized that in some way she missed him. When he turned 18, she came to him again, this time with only one reason; to posses him or with better words, to make him her companion. Even immortals need company, right? So ever since they lived together in her apartment.
Current Residence- To public she's known as wealthy young woman, who donated money for local theatre in Greek. This is important to know because she lives in the 'attic' of that very theatre. It's not really an attic but quite a nice apartment with everything that’s needed for living. One may ask: why theatre? Simply because Apate enjoys pretending and mind tricks of all sorts so it’s quite obvious she would live there. And besides, who can say no to free shows?
